Hi Frankie! Thanks for the question. So there’s a few reasons why you're experiencing a musty smell after sex and it may a require a little investigating on your end to find out why.
The most common reasoning for unusual vaginal oder is BV or Bacterial Vaginosis. BV is an overgrowth of bacteria that causes a grayish discharge with an unwanted order. This order can be exaggerated when mixed with sperm however it’s usually described as a fishy smell, not like the musty smell you're experiencing.
You did mention that this happens mostly after you and your boyfriend have sex. If he has a penis and you’re have sex without barrier protection methods, the mixing of his sperm and your vaginal fluid may be what’s causing the smell. The vagina is an intricate ecosystem of bacteria that’s slightly acidic. Sperm is naturally an alkaline. The simply chemical reaction of these two fluids combining can cause a smell, though usually not enough to be distracting. This reaction isn’t usually harmful, though lingering sperm can sometimes cause PH imbalances. If you aren’t using barriers, try using a condom and see if this stops the issue.
If you are using a barrier method like a condom, try switching brands or to a condom made from a different material. Sensitivities to what a condom is made from or the lubricant or spermicide on a condom is common. If you’re using lube (which I think everyone should be), make sure it’s body safe and PH balanced to your vagina. While you’re at it, check your body wash, lotion, and any other products that come into contact with your vag.
Next thing to check—there could also be the issue of some unwanted matter hanging out inside your vaginal canal. Bits of toilet paper, a missing tampon, or even pieces of a torn condom can get stuck inside your vagina, eventually leading to an odor. Instead of douching (which can majorly disruptive to your vagina’s natural PH), go see your gynecologist.
Finally, the smell may actually be coming from your partner’s ejaculate. In a healthy condition, ejaculate doesn’t have much of a smell. However, if the prostate gland isn’t working correctly, it can cause an order. The vaginal smells you're experiencing may be something their body is creating, and not yours. Have your partner check their semen next time they masturbate or you both have sex. If this is the cause of the odor, your partner should take themselves to a doctor.
